Unesco Putorana Plateau

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are a lot of natural attractions concentrated on the territory of Russia. Here are the beauties that are not found anywhere else. The only drawback is their inaccessibility. The point is not only that tourism, as an industry in the state, is still poorly developed. Many amazing objects, such as the Putorana Plateau, are hidden among impassable forests and mountain ranges.

The Putorana Plateau in Siberia is a mountain range and a unique natural reserve at the same time. Its territory is truly huge. There are about 9 thousand lakes and waterfalls, which are among the highest in Russia. The main feature of the plateau is the lack of a top. It was called the “mountain without a peak” since ancient times by the inhabitants of the neighboring settlements.

The plateau has an ancient basalt installation. It was supremely nearly 1 kilometer away. The highest point of Putorana is the rock called "Stone". It rises to a 1.7 km altitude. The total area of the local reserve exceeds 250 thousand square kilometers. It also includes the Yenisei River and its tributaries.

On the territory of the Siberian plateau Putorana there are many different canyons. Some of them have cliffs several tens or even hundreds of meters high. There are also areas that, in the opinion of tourists, resemble the Norwegian fjords. If we talk about vegetation, then on the territory of the Putorana nature reserve is clearly traced natural zonality. So, on the lower tier of the array grow deciduous forests, mainly birch and spruce. The higher, the more tundra vegetation is observed, and on the plateau itself the landscape resembles the northern lands.

The cold climate has affected animals. The most common inhabitants of these places are deer, moose and partridges. And species such as the black crane, bighorn sheep and mountain goose are endangered and are protected. Those who managed to visit the Putorana Plateau and took photos of these animals are truly lucky.

Where is the Putorana plateau

The Putorana Plateau is a table mountain, which is very common in other regions of the planet, for example, in the Crimea. Its northern part goes towards the Taimyr Peninsula, which is the northernmost point of mainland Russia. To be more precise, the Putorana Plateau is located in the northwestern part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, in such municipal areas as Evenki and Taimyr.

How to get to the Putorana Plateau

Getting to the Putorana Reserve is not easy. First you need to get to the nearest city, which is Norilsk. You can come here from Irkutsk or Krasnoyarsk, as well as fly by plane from Moscow or other cities. There are no roads to the plateau, so you can only get there by snowmobile, helicopter or catamaran. The easiest and fastest way is, of course, by helicopter. But not everyone can afford such luxury.

Among the other options, you can note the trip to one of the tourist bases located around the Putorana Plateau. How to get there you can check with the administration of a specific tourist base. You can also take advantage of sightseeing offers. Most popular routes:

Businyak - a length of 360 kilometers, including moving along such rivers as Businyak, Lama and Norilsk, as well as visiting the Lam and Melkoye lakes;

Lake Lama - length 180 kilometers, a trip along the rivers Lama, Mikchangda, Norilsk and lakes such as Lama and Melkoye.

When is it better to visit the Putorana plateau

Putorana Reserve is located in the north, so the climate here is appropriate - cold and harsh. Summer is short and lasts only a few months - from June to August. There are almost no such seasons as autumn and spring on the plateau, they fly instantly. The most favorable month for travel is July. At this time, the temperature can rise to +12 degrees Celsius. But it is worth being prepared for constant winds.

In the remaining months on the Putorana Plateau, the weather is less attractive for tourism. Even in April, the thermometer can drop to -40 degrees. The ice in this region comes down already in the second decade of July and already appears in September again. Large snow cover - up to 4 meters. The first snow, like rain, can fall quite suddenly.

Features

Unlike tourist bases, there is no place to live on the plateau itself, therefore, one cannot do without tents and all the necessary equipment. Water and food should be harvested based on the time that will be spent on travel. It is advisable to take some provisions in reserve. It is better not to count to find mushrooms, berries and other food, which you can get in theory during the hike. This may not happen. In the summer, the region is full of mosquitoes, so the tents should be with a mosquito net, and you should not forget about repellents.

Even in summer, the temperature at night drops to 5 degrees, so warm clothes are required. Shoes must also be of high quality, with a strong sole. Better get a spare pair. Must-takes: navigator, extra batteries, satellite communications and a first aid kit. To visit the reserve you will definitely need a special permit. The administration is located in Norilsk, 22 Talkhanskaya Street.

Before the trip, it is advisable to take out medical insurance, as well as register with the rescue service, indicating the route of your trip. If, after a specified time, your group does not get in touch, a search operation will be launched. Going to the Putorana Plateau, you need to sensibly assess you physical training. Marching loads are much higher than in normal life.

What to see in the surroundings

Quite often, the Putoran Plateau is called the country of waterfalls. A variety of lakes and numerous occupy almost 10 percent of its entire area. The most famous and popular waterfall - Talnikovy. It has a height of about 700 meters, entering the list of the highest cascades in Russia. The status of the deepest and most powerful waterfall belongs to another water giant - the Big Kureisk.

The local lakes are a great place not only for admiring the water surface, but also for fishing. Because of its accessibility, lakes Canine, Hantai, Lama, and Keta are attractive for this kind of recreation. Here you can catch burbot, tuguna, whitefish, grayling, etc.

According to tourists, the most beautiful is Lake Vivi. The road to it is not easy - but its views are worth it. The pond is one of the cleanest and largest on the plateau. In some areas, its depth is as much as 200 meters. Also, many local rivers take water from it.

Rivers and lakes, unsurpassed mountain peaks, deep canyons and majestic waterfalls, centuries-old trees and deer herds - Putorana Plateau has something to be proud of. Of course, the journey here can not be called affordable. However, to save money and go towards the unknown and mysterious land, still worth it.
