Lake Baikal is a huge ancient lake in the mountains of Siberia to the north of the Mongolian border.
Baikal is considered the deepest lake in the world.
It is surrounded by a network of hiking routes called the Great Baikal Trail.
The village of Listvyanka, located on the western shore of the lake, is a popular starting point for summer excursions. In winter, you can skate (check out BBC Earth) and dog sled.
Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22-23% of the world's fresh surface water.
Baikal is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of which exist nowhere else in the world.
The lake was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
